Life (short story)

Tears streaming…

Heart racing…

Hands shaking…

His voice cracking, desperate for some sign of life. The ground, covered in fallen leaves, is hard, wet and cold, surrounded by tall trees that sway in the winds of the storm.

“Come on baby, stay with me! Come on baby! You can’t go, not now, not like this!”

Lips to lips. Breathe. Her chest rises, then falls, motionless. Hands pressed against her chest, push, push, push, push. Nothing.

“BABY! Come on baby! Come back to me! SOMEBODY HELP ME!” His voice snaps from the strain.

Rain is pouring down all around them. His hands wildly fight the cold as he attempts to wipe her dark brown hair, now touched with red, from her face.

“Sweetie…baby, please, please I need you, come back…you can’t go…not like this!”

Lips to Lips. Breathe. Hands to her chest, steady…steady. Push, push, push, push, push. Still nothing.

“HELPPP MEEEE!!!! PLEASE GOD! HELP ME!!! SOMEBODY!!!”

His voice echoes off the leaves that tip and drip the tears of heaven. Rain, chilling to the bone, as her body lies lifeless before her lover. The pounding in his head gets louder, he stands up, then screams, “HELP ME!!” Hands pressed against his forehead, soaking hair and flooded wet skin, shouting to the sky, “GOD Don’t GO Baby! PLEASE DON’T GO!” Now looking down at her, lips quivering with fright, he collapses back to his knees.

“Baby…please, I can’t live without you…God, please don’t go….please, come back…please….” The sound of his voice grows weaker, he lays himself down next to her motionless body, looking up at the plume of smoke that comes from the silver car’s engine and the tree that caused the scene, bent at an unnatural angle from the impact.

He turns, looking at his lover, kissing her, begging her to come back to him, whispering into her ears, “please…..please…..come back…..please….I love you…..come back to me… baby….please….”

Tears streaming…

Heart racing…

Hands shaking…

“I have to keep trying! Come on baby! Please!”

Lips to Lips. Breathe. Her chest goes up, then down, then up…then down. Hands together and against her chest. Push, push, push, push. Nothing more.

“COME TO ME BABY! COME BACK! PLEASE!”

Lips to Lips. Breathe. Her chest goes up, then down, then up. Then down. Then up. Then down. Then up. … … … life.
